Chemistry Course Description
This course begins with a basic review of the scientific method and an introduction to chemistry. In addition to Friendly Chemistry, I will also introduce material from Discovering Design with Chemistry by Dr. Jay Wile along with several hands-on lab experiments to enhance understanding of the concepts. Only the Friendly Chemistry Textbook will be necessary to purchase, the other materials will be provided by me. This class will cover (1) high school science credit with lab. A study of matter, atoms and electrons follow as an introduction to the Periodic Table of Elements. Through an in-depth study of the Periodic Table, students will examine the relationship between elements and families of elements to further understand the stability and reactivity of different elements. Students will explore atomic theory, study the trends of the periodic table of elements, investigate quantum mechanics, Naming and writing formulas for ionic and covalent compounds, balance chemical equations, stoichiometry, solutions, gas laws, acids and bases. Learning methods will include required and optional reading materials, laboratory experiments and games, and completing interactive activities with the internet and technology.
This course will be using the textbook, which each student will need to purchase before the first class: Friendly Chemistry 4th edition
Authors Joey and Lisa Hajda
